Going to sleep without setting my 5:00 a.m. alarm brings such a blissful feeling to me. I don’t really sleep in on the weekends due to my body being programmed to wake up at the crack of dawn, but just laying in bed in the morning without the pressure of having to throw myself together and run out the door is pure delight.
One of my absolute favorite ways to spend a lazy weekend morning is to pamper myself with a little DIY spa experience. During the week, my beauty and skincare routine is super quick (read more here), so taking some time to show myself (and more specifically, my face) a bit of extra love makes me extremely happy. It also doesn’t require a ton of effort and you can use things you already have at home. Effective, efficient, budget-friendly, and spending time in my bed? Yeah, sign me up.
An ideal DIY spa experience at home will vary for every person, but I’ve put together a list of my favorite products and practices to help me relax and show some self-love on a weekend morning (or afternoon, or evening, …or anytime really)!
1. Set the mood: I’m obsessed with dimming the lights in my bedroom. It brings some kind of magical energy into the room and instantly relaxes me. To accompany the dimmed lights, I light a candle with a calming scent and brew up a giant cup of hot tea. The ambiance makes me feel like I’m actually at the spa, meanwhile I’m in my bedroom.
2. Take a steamy shower: Ok, maybe don’t light the candle until you’ve gotten out of the shower to be safe. On my DIY spa days, I take an ultra hot shower. I find taking a hot shower such a soothing way to wake up, and since I shower at night during the week to save time in the morning, this is an extra special treat. After standing under the hot water for probably way too long, I cleanse my face with Korres Greek Yoghurt Foaming Cream Cleanser. This particular cleanser makes the experience feel slightly elevated.
3. Look the part: When I hop out of the shower, I cover my entire body with coconut oil, which is my absolute all-time favorite natural moisturizer, but I leave my face alone. I throw on my fluffy white robe and toss my hair up with a satin scrunchie.
4. Face mask: After I’ve gotten myself into my spa attire, I apply the Korres Pomegranate Resurfacing Mask. I let this sit on my face for about 10 minutes, and in the meantime I’m back in bed reading a book or watching The Real Housewives of New York City. Sometimes the mask sits on my face for quite a while, depending on how comfy I feel and how much drama is happening in the episode I’m watching.
5. Lip scrub: I get out of bed to wash off the face mask and then apply a lip scrub. Lip scrub? Yup! I feel like there is so much emphasis on taking care of the skin on our faces, but our lips tend to get neglected. Using a lip scrub keeps the lips smooth & prevents that gross feeling when you apply lipstick with chapped lips that feels like you’re pasting the dried skin back into place. You all know that feeling I’m talking about, right? I use the Mint Julips lip scrub from Lush. It does such an amazing job of exfoliating and evening out your lips.
6. Jade roller: After my face and lips are cleaned off, I put moisturizer on my face & grab my jade roller. I probably have made my second enormous cup of tea at this point too, so I take it all back to bed with me. I get back in bed and continue to enjoy my spa ambiance while using my jade roller on my face. There are so many amazing reasons to use a jade roller. It promotes lymphatic drainage and gets rid of any puffiness from your face. Jade rollers also naturally have a slightly cold feel to them, so it feels really nice on your skin.
Depending on what I have to do on the day that I’m enjoying my DIY spa experience, I may get up and move on with my day after jade rolling. If I don’t have anywhere specific that I need to be, I’ll continue to bask in the pleasure that is my spa ambiance, and I may also use a nose pore strip or under eye mask if I’m feeling like I really want to milk this whole process.
Regardless of the length of time spent doing this for yourself, or how many products are used in the process, it sets an incredible tone for the rest of the day.
